Excerpts
"An Arkansas State League, with Pine Bluff, Little Rock, Fort Smith, Hot Springs and Texarkana as members, is among the possibilities. Letters have been addressed to the four towns by Secretary Bloom, and the newspapers there are booming the organization. The result will be a season of reciprocal games which will be highly profitably to Pine Bluff. Tonight the Association meets in the Truelock parlors, and Secretary Bloom will have a lengthy report to make. Sherringhaus and his Texas League pitcher League pitcher, Mr. W. Longley came in Saturday afternoon on the Cotton belt, and yesterday joined the boys in a little practice at Jones Park. Sherry showed up in old time style, while Mr. Longley made a very favorable impression. The Sporting News nine, of St. Louis, has been heard from, offering a three days’ engagement here. They rank with the best semi-professional nines in St. Louis, and their will probably be accepted later in the season. Secretary Bloom is trying to open with Memphis, and wrote them an offer. The reply names a price which is considered high and further correspondence will be had with them. Cairo has not yet been heard from. Pitcher Ryan, the Western League man, at present with Sedalia, has been heard from, but his terms are above the limit the boys feel justified in paying. He will be made a definite offer with the hope he will accept. Bohannon, who is with Carthage, has been telegraphed for, and if he can be secured at a reasonable figure he will play here this season. Pine Bluff base ball has never been opened more satisfactory or greeted with more encouragement by all rank of Pine Bluff citizens. The result will be a nine which will bring the pennant of Arkansas to roost at Pine Bluff this fall."5
"The following comprise the team as at present organized, but upon the arrival of new ball players several changes will be made: Toney Neiderweiser, Frank Flanders, Gus Sherringhausen, Pratt Savage, M. Ryan, Fred Berthold, W. Longley, G. McCollom, center field, Geo. E. Marshal, right field. Stick Evans, substitute."6
"Tomorrow the Pine Bluff base ball team leaves for Hot Springs eleven strong. The delegation will consist of Henry Cook, Manager; Tony Neiderweiser, Captain; Ryan and Longley, pitchers and outfield; Steinhoff, second; Sherringhaus., third; Flanders, short stop; Marshall, left field and Sweeney, right field. An extra man or two will be taken, but the decision as to which of the ball tossers unnamed will be taken is yet to be made."7
