Mel McGaha

Mel McGaha, born September 26th, 1926 in Bastrop, LA, was a major league baseball manager. He attended Mabelvale, AR High School before attending the University of Arkansas from 1944-48 on a basketball scholarship, but also lettered in football. After college, McGaha played 11 seasons of minor league baseball, as well as a year of professional basketball with the New York Knicks during 1948-1949 season.

McGaha began managing in the minor leagues in 1954. In 1961, he became a coach with the Cleveland Indians and was promoted to manager in 1963. The following year, he became a coach for the Kansas City Athletics and assumed the manager position of the Athletics in 1964. He also managed the Athletics during part of the '65 season, but returned to the minor leagues during the 1966-1967 seasons. McGaha's baseball career ended in 1970 after two years of coaching with the Houston Astros.

McGaha died February 3rd, 2002 in Tulsa, OK.
