Ted Strong

Theodore Relighn Strong Sr., born June 3rd, 1891 in Little Rock, AR,1 was a Negro League professional baseball manager.

Biography

Strong was the son of Oscborne Strong and Angeline (nee Talley) Strong.2 After he was orphaned at his mother's death in 1900 and his father's death in 1904, he left Arkansas at age ten and moved to Illinois with his brother.3

Strong may have played with the Chicago American Giants in 1913, and later played for the South Bend Colored Giants.4

Strong was the manager of the upstart Indianapolis A.B.C.'s in 1937. The team's performance was mediocre, and he did not return to manage the club 1938.

Strong was the father of professional players Ted Strong and Othello Strong.

Strong died on February 14th, 1984 in Chicago, IL.5 He was cremated.6

1 Strong's WWI Draft Card gives his birth year as 1891. However, Ted Strong Jr.: The Untold Story of an Original Harlem Globetrotter and Negro Leagues All-Star by Sherman L. Jenkins gives his birth year as 1894. Based on the 1900 census, in which he is listed as 9 years old, 1891 appears to be more likely.
