Garris was a native of Wesson, AR. He was signed by St. Louis Cardinals scout Fred Hawn in 1960.3

"Charles Howard Garris , born June 11, 1938, son of the late Alden Andrew Garris and Amy Ethel Adams, loving husband, father and grandfather, died suddenly on Wednesday, April 28, 2010. Charles was an ordained deacon in his church and knew the Lord as his Savior and is home with Him. Charles was retired from Houston ISD as teacher and principal and was a professor at the University of Houston Downtown. Charles served as lieutenant in the United States Army and was a professional baseball player with the St. Louis Cardinals. He earned a master's degree in administrative education in 1975 and was among the Who's Who among America's teachers awards recipients. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Linda Hibbard Garris ; children Sharron Yvonne Garris Cathey and husband, John, Carol Garris Maciel and husband, Guillermo, John Charles Garris and wife, Stacey Marie, and James Howard Garris ; grandchildren Cole Denman Cathey, Holden John Cathey, Alden Andrew Garris and Abigail Elizabeth Garris ; one brother; five sisters; several nieces and nephews and many loving friends. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. on Tuesday at Klein Funeral Home Chapel in Magnolia, Texas."5
