Herbert Fishback

Herbert Yates Fishback, born in 1875 in Arkansas,1 2 was a professional baseball player with the Fort Smith Indians in the 1897 Arkansas State League.

Biography

Fishback was the son of Arkansas Governor William Meade Fishback.3

Fishback was captain of the football and baseball teams at the University of Arkansas.4

Fishback died on January 3rd, 1898 in Fayetteville, AR.5 He was buried in Oak Cemetery in Fort Smith.6

"Fayetteville, Jan 3. --Herbert Fishback, son of ex-Gov. W. M. Fishback, and one of the most popular of the large number of A. I. O. students, died this morning. His father was with him at the time of his death. He had always taken a leading part in athletics from the time he entered A. I. U. and was one of the strongest members of the football team."9

"An announcement of the death of Herbert Fishback, of Ft. Smith, is made. It occured at Fayetteville, Ark., on Monday morning at 9 o'clock after an illness of only nine days of pneumonia. Mr. Fishback had been attending the university there for a number of years and was captain of the football team when they played Drury college."10

"Fort Smith, Jan. 5. --The funeral of Herbert Y. Fishback, son of ex-Gov. Fishback, who died at Fayetteville, took place from St. John's Episcopal church this afternoon. The remains were escorted to the cemetery by twenty cadets and buried with Military honors. The pall bearers were as follows, cadets from Mr. Fishback's company: J. H. Snapp, G. B. Wood, George Nichols, George H. Askew, J. l. Homer and C. G. Price."11
