Excerpts

"The baseball playing days are over for Fred Cato, popular former catcher for Joplin's Western Association club who was sought by Runt Marr for service here this season. Cato informed Marr yesterday that because of a doctors order, he will not take an active part in game this season unless he lands a job as umpire in Dale Gear's circuit for which he has applied. Cato, resident of Muskogee, broke into league baseball in 1929 with Muskogee and the next two seasons performed for Joplin. He was sold to Kansas City's Blues in 1932 and was sent to Springfield, Ill., of the Three-Eye League that season. When the league disbanded, Cato returned to Muskogee and hooked on with the Muskogee club for the latter part of the Western Association campaign."6
