James Duncan

James Weldon Duncan, born November 10th, 1921 in Choctaw, AR1 was a professional baseball umpire from 1949-1953.

Biography

Duncan died on December 24th, 1996 was buried at Huie Cemetery in Clinton, AR.

"JAMES WELDON DUNCAN , a retired coach and math teacher at Sylvan Hills High School, formerly of Brinkley, died on Wednesday, December 25, 1996, at his home in Gravel Ridge in north Pulaski County. He was married to Mollie Brittenum, formerly of Brinkley. He was born on November 10, 1921, in Choctaw in Van Buren County to the late Mr. and Mrs. B.A. Duncan of Brinkley. He was a World War II Navy Air Corps veteran, serving in the Western Pacific and in the Aleutian Islands, where he survived a plane crash. He lettered in football and baseball at College (now University) of the Ozarks in Clarksville. He was a minor league umpire in the Cotton States and Kitty Leagues in the early 1950s. Mr. Duncan taught school in Lonoke, Cale, Perryville and Shongaloo, La., before joining the Pulaski County Special School District in 1959. He was the Sylvan Hills High School football coach and baseball coach in the 1960s. In 1965, he managed the Sylvan Hills High School baseball team to a state championship. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church."2
