"Mr. Charles James Maness, Sr., age 78, of Palestine, died Sunday at the St. Michaels Hospital in Texarkana. His death came sudden and unexpected. Mr. Maness was born January 14, 1931, in East St. Louis, Illinois, and was the son of James Fred 'Buster' Maness and Carrie Mae DuBois Maness. He lived in Palestine most of his life, was a Veteran of the United State of America Army and served in the Korean War. He served as City Clerk, Recorder and Treasurer for the City of Palestine, was retired from David Gibbs Farms in Brinkley, coached for many years the Forrest City American Legion Baseball Teams, was a true lover of the great sport, Baseball, and a great fan of the St. Louis Cardinals. Mr. Maness is survived by his wife of forty years, JoAnn Burkart Maness, four sons; Charles James Maness Jr. of Texarkana, Wade Oliver Maness of Palestine, Lyle Norris Maness and Mark Maness, both of San Diego, California, two step-sons; Joseph Shapkoff and Donald Shapkoff Jr. and three grandchildren; Katherine Maness, Sherry Maness and Brian Tucker. He had one son, Fred Vernon 'Buster' Maness who preceded him in death. Services for Mr. Maness will be held at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel, 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, with burial in Bell Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday evening 6:00 till 8:00 P.M., at Stevens Funeral Home with Stevens Funeral Home in charge of arrangements."2
