Cleve Turner

Cleve C. Turner ("Bear"), born May 12th, 18841 near Hope, AR,2 3 was a professional baseball player from 1906-1908.

Biography

In 1903, Turner played with Minden, LA.,4 and Marianna, AR in the East Arkansas League,5 In 1906, he played with Camden in the 1906 Arkansas-Texas League.6 In 1907 he played in Mississippi.7 In 1908, he briefly appeared with Brinkley in the Arkansas State League.8 He also played with the Ouachita College baseball team for a number of years.9

Turner died on October 1st, 1939 in Arkadelphia, AR,10 and was buried in Rose Hill Cemetery in Arkadelphia, AR.11

"The late Cleve ("Bear") Turner played professional baseball for several years after leaving Ouachita [College]. Turner, who threw from a crouch, was the only catcher who could hold W.F. Rogers."12

"Arkadelphia, Oct 2. - Cleve Turner, 55, who gave the name of Tigers to the Ouachita College athletic teams, died here late last night following an extended illness. Mr. Turner, who attended Ouachita, was a great baseball catcher. He was a member of a famous team in the early part of the century along with the Rogers brothers, Jesse Moore, Arch Rowland, Elmer Coyle, Rupert Blakeley, and others, nearly all of whome [sic] became professional later. After Turner's graduation, he coached for a time. He was born May 12th, 1884, near Hope and the family moved to Arkadelphia when Cleve was seven. He attended the public school and Ouachita and Henderson Colleges. September 6, 1911, he was married to Miss Laura Eva Flanagin of Arkadelphia. He also is survived by there daughters, Mrs. A. C. Wardlaw, Tulare, Cal. and the Misses Martha may and Laura Eva Turner, Arkadelphia; and by for sons, First Lieutenant Cleve turner, Denison, Ia:, James Flanagin Turner, Douglas, Ariz,: Humphreys Talbot Turner, and Otis Hawes Turner, both of Arkadelphia and by a brother, Dr. Otis Turner, Louisville, Ky. Funeral services will be held at 4 Tuesday afternoon at the home by the Rev. Francis A. Buddin."13
