
Biography
Quellmalz may have first come to Blytheville in 1922 when he managed the Blytheville Tigers, a local semi-pro team. In 1935, Quellmalz married Blytheville resident Lucille Armstrong.2 He soon began operating a successful laundry cleaning business in Blytheville, where he lived the rest of his life.
Although he was a light hitting first baseman who didn't enter organized baseball until his 31st year, Quellmalz had considerable success as a manager. In 1923, he led the Dyersburg Deer to the Kitty League championship, and the following year, his Paris, KY, team lost in the Kitty League championship.
Quellmalz died on August 31st, 1963 in Blytheville, AR.3 He was buried in Maple Grove Cemetery in Blytheville.4

"Dutch Quellmalz goes to Dyersburg April 15, to assume the position as manager of it baseball team for the coming season. Dutch made a fine record for Blytheville last year, and we predict a successful season for Dyersburg under the superb generalship of Quellmalz. He has a commanding personality that gets the best there is in a ball player."5
"Meridian Miss., March 16. - With Manager "Dutch" Quellmalz slated to report for duty on Tuesday, things are expected to begin to hum in local baseball circles "Dutch" is coming to get things ready for the beginning of practice on April 1. Quellmalz comes to Meridian with a very impressive record. He managed the Parish, Ky., [sic] club of the Kitty league last season, won the second half of the split season, but lost to Dyersburg in the post season series. He has had unusual success as a manager. He led the first basemen of the league in fielding last season and hit .250."6
"Odis [sic] E. Quellmalz, former minor league player and manager, died at a hospital in Blytheville, Ark., August 31, at the age of 72. A native of Mound City, Ill., he played and managed teams in the Kitty, Tri-States and Cotton States leagues in the 1920s. He was a first baseman and occasionally pitched. Quellmalz, a prominent Blytheville businessman, is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lucille Quellmalz, and two daughters, Miss Mabel Quellmalz and Mrs. Elizabeth Nickens."7
