"Benson is an outfielder and one of the very fastest men among the more than 100 who trained here this spring. He was undefeated in the series of sprints held by Hayworth. He is 26 and a native of Hampton, Ark. Dodger scouts signed him for a trial off the sensational showing he made with the semi-pro El Dorado Oilers and Camden ordnance plant teams. He was 4-F in the draft. Benson is 5-10 and 175; throws right and bats left. He was handicapped for two week here by a hand injury but has been working normally this week."6
"Earle Benson , 86, of Hamburg, died Sunday, Nov. 9, 2008, at the Cornerstone Hospital of West Monroe, La. He was a native of Woodbury, and a resident of Hamburg for the past 38 years. He graduated from Hampton High School and the Auto Diesel College in Nashville, Tenn. He retired from Georgia-Pacifi c Chemical and the City of Hamburg. He was a member of the First Baptist Church where he was an usher for many years. He was preceded in death by two wives, Dean Dunn Benson and Muriel Duke Benson ; two sons, James Earle Benson Jr. and Phillip Lynn Benson ; his parents, Noah and Dollie Bethea Benson ; a brother, Arvil Benson ; and a sister, Beatrice Johnson. Survivors include his wife, Janet King Benson of Hamburg; fi ve step-children, Tammy Love of Mangum, La., Helen Croswell of Panama City, Fla., James "Jim Bo" Duke of Whitehall, David Duke of Little Rock, and Susie Harrison of Lake Village; two sisters, Myrle Blann of El Dorado and Mervyn Morris of Shreveport, La.; numerous grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. Funeral will be held at 2 p.m. We dnesday, Nov. 12, at First Baptist Church with Dr. Bobby Pennington and the Rev. Klois Hargis offi ciating. Burial will be in the Hamburg Cemetery under the direction of Jones-Hartshorn Funeral Home, Inc. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 352, Hamburg, AR 71646."7
