"Gene Franklin Wofford, 73 of Dallas, Texas, passed away Saturday, March 14, 2009 in Dallas. He was born April 20, 1935, in Greenbrier,Arkansas, a son of the late Hubert Wofford and Clarice Beene Fielder; and his step-father, Randall Fielder. Mr. Wofford graduated from State Teachers College where he was a star athlete. In 1956, he joined the United States Army, where he was active in sports, playing baseball and basketball, after which he immediately signed with the Detroit Tigers professional baseball organization. In 1964, he joined the United States Secret Service. In 1965, he was one of four agents chosen for protective detail for the Kennedy family following the assassination of JFK. In 1966-67, he was Special Agent assigned to the White House detail. He was assigned to the Washington Field Office, the New York City Field Office, and later the Dallas Field Office where he retired in 1974 on medical disability. He was a member of AFAUSS (Association of Former Agents of the United States Secret Service). Survivors are his aunts, Mildred Langford and Carolyn Gray; cousins, Luana Beene, Ruth Wilcox, Kelly Watson, and Steve Beene; and his caring neighbors and friends, Johnny O'Pry and wife Valerie of Dallas. The family will receive friends from Noon until 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 19, 2009 at Roller-McNutt Funeral Home, Greenbrier. Graveside Service will follow immediately at East Shady Grove Cemetery"4
