"Howard Herman Horst , 96, long-time business and civic leader, died at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Stuttgart Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Turpin Funeral Home with the Rev. George Rook, pastor of Grand Avenue United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Lone Tree Cemetery following a brief graveside service. Horst is survived by his wife of 74 years, Dorothy Denslow Horst of Stuttgart; four nieces, Amy Horst -Branson, Jo Horst Monk, Melinda Horst Smith and Mary Horst Trent; three nephews, Cecil R. Walton III of Houston, Robert Horst of Plainsboro, N. J. and Charles Richard Horst of Little Rock, and one sister-in-law, Virginia Horst of Casscoe. Horst was preceded in death by four brothers, Joe Horst , Robert Horst , Bill Horst and Dick Horst and two sisters, Evelyn Dever and Margaret Ellis. Horst was born Aug. 15, 1908 in Stuttgart, son of Herman and Elsie Horst , and was a lifelong resident of Stuttgart. Horst owned and operated Horst Car and Home Supply Center at the northeast corner of Sixth and Main Streets which he was a local dealer for Goodyear Tires. Horst went into business with Emmett Shields, an insurance company which evolved into real estate and insurance which has been known as Shields- Horst for several years. He graduated from Stuttgart High School in 1926 and attended the University of Arkansas where he lettered in basketball and baseball and was a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. He married the former Dorothy Denslow in 1929 and the couple would have celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary on Dec. 12. Horst served as Stuttgart mayor from 1947 through 1949. Horst was a lifelong member of Grand Avenue United Methodist Church which his grandfather was among the founders. He served as chairman of the committee which led to the construction of the church's education building. Honorary pallbearers will include Shields- Horst Real Estate Co. employees and members of the Stuttgart Rotary Club of which he was a past president."5
