Cunningham's exact identity is unknown. However, he was reported to be a native of a Johnson County, AR1 and a resident of Newport, AR2 .
1915 was Cunningham's only known year in professional baseball. He was initially signed by Mobile of the Southern League, but was sent to Augusta of the South Atlantic League by early July.

“Charley Schmidt, Mobile boss, dropped into Little Rock for the Kavanaugh funeral, from his home to Spadra and told of his quest in the wilds for a new Ed Walsh, named Joe Cunningham, a native of the hills of Johnson County, a breeding place for ball players. Schmidt, his brother Walter, the Coyles, the Cowans, Basham, and a dozens of others in major and minor league base ball come from this Arkansas county, and the natives have told such elaborate tale of this youthful phenom that Schmidt has taken a guide and gone into the hills after him. According to information, Cunningham is unhittable, and none of the catchers have been able to stand up under his fire. Schmidt took a big mitt and extra pad with him, and if there is any truth in the Amos Rusie speed of the unknown, he will come back attached to a Mobile string. Schmidt says Cunningham is built along the same lines as Walsh, and he has high hopes that he is the trail of a new Walter Johnson” 3
"Manager Schmidt announced today that he bad signed Tex 1 ' Covington, formerly with Kansas City, and Cunningham, a semi-pro, from Newport, Ark. Both are right-handed pitchers and will report this week. 4
"Cunningham, a youngster, is setting a rapid pace and will more than likely make the team; he is a spit-ball pitcher with speed to burn. He is a six-footer and weighs over 200 pounds. Schmidt says he is a second Tesreau. "5
