John Woolly

John Cantrell Woolly,1 born July 13th, 1896 in Greenbrier, AR,2 was a professional baseball player from 1923-1929.

Biography

Woolly played with Warren, AR, in the 1922 Southeast Arkansas League. He received a tryout with Little Rock in 1923, but was sent to play with Longview, TX, instead.

After his baseball career, Woolly moved to Texas.3 He died in Wheeler County, TX, on June 23rd, 19844 and was buried in Shamrock Cemetery in Shamrock.5

"Conway, April 8. --John Wooley of Guy, catcher on the State Normal baseball team, broke a leg today while sliding into second base. The accident will keep him out of the game the remainder of the season. Wooley is one of the best backstops in Arkansas college circles, and his loss will be keenly felt be the Teachers. His place will be filled by Harold Henderson, who will be brought in from center field. The accident occurred in the third inning of a practice game between the Pedagogues and the town team. The Normal lost the contest, 4 to 3."6
