Joseph Bertig

Joseph Russell Bertig, born December 10th, 1881 in Ozark, AR was president of the Northeast Arkansas League in 1910 and 1936-1941.

Biography

Bertig's uncle Saul was a member of the 1884 Gainesville Base Ball Club.

Bertig died on October 18th, 1951 in Paragould, AR.1 He was buried in Linwood Cemetery in Paragould, AR.2

"Joseph Russell Bertig, president of the Northeast Arkansas League from 1930 [sic] to 1941, died of a heart attack at his home in Paragould, Ark., October 18. He was 69 years old. The widow and a sister Mrs. Dan Kempner of Galveston, Tex., survive. Born in Ozark, Ark., Bertig moved to Paragould with his parents when a child. He, his father and an uncle, Sol Bertig, built many of Paragould's major buildings. With his sister, he donated land for the site of the Municipal Hospital to his parents. Bertig was president of Bertig Co., Hurt Wholesale Grocery Co., Bertig Cotton Co., of Memphis, TN., and vice-president of the Arbyd (Mo.) Compress."3
