Willie Spearman

Willie Spearman ("Speed Ball",1 "Cannon Ball",2 "Black Diamond"3 ), born on December 31st, 1899 in Arkadelphia, AR,4 was a Negro League baseball player. He was the brother of Charles Spearman, Codie Spearman, Hayse Spearman, Henry Spearman and Clyde Spearman. See the Spearman Family.

Biography

Willie Spearman was one of fourteen children born to Iverson Spearman and Fannie (nee Phifer) Spearman.5 He was raised in Arkadelphia, AR and likely began his baseball career with local teams including the 1917 Arkadelphia High Steppers,6 1921 Vapor City Tigers7 and 1922 Little Rock A.B.C.s.8 His first major engagement in Negro baseball came with the Memphis Red Sox, with whom he played from 19229 to 1925. The following year, he joined the Cleveland Elites10 and finished the season with Pete Hill's Colored Stars of Buffalo, NY.11 He returned in 1927 with the Cleveland Hornets12 13 and the Nashville Elite Giants.14 Spearman's last known activity was with Nashville in 1929.15 16

Spearman died on December 29th, 1937 in St. Louis, MO.17 He was buried in Washington Park Cemetery in St. Louis.
